Water Polo News

From the Fremont Argus:

IRVINGTON 11, AMERICAN 3

Goals: I–Amy Lovelin 5, Kat Ashley 3, Quiana Thompson 2, Stephanie Tsuyemura. A–Kelly Flaherty, Janae Camello, Samantha Aberle.

MVAL records–Irvington 1-2; American 0-2. JV score–American 8, Irvington 4.

Jim’s Note: History was made yesterday as the American High JV girls and Varsity boys both recorded first ever victories in MVAL play. The historic victim was cross town rival Irvington. JV girls set the tone of the day with an inspiring 8-4 victory. The Varsity girls continue to struggle however while trying to find the right formula to break into the win column.

Eagle Girls improve in loss to Colts

American High girls water polo headed to Union City and the home pool of the Logan High School Colts on a cloudy, cold day last Monday for a MVAL “dual in the pool.” In a close game early, the Eagle girls were playing tough defense. The end result however was a 13-3 loss in the second game of the MVAL season. Kelly Flaherty scored two goals for American and had the assist on the only other Eagle goal, a sweet “tap in” by fellow senior, Melissa. Continued improvement and inspiring play by the three returning seniors hopes to carry over to the Irvington High matchup under the lights this evening at American.

Busy Saturday

Busy Saturday

Had one of those great, full days yesterday. Kelly had a 6:30am water polo practice which got most all of us up early. After her practice she was back home to change and getting ready to go the HERS Breast Cancer Walk out at Coyote hills with her bud Stephanie. Barb and I went on a 18 mile bike ride out to the end of Alameda Creek Trail and back. The trail was a bit crowded because the local Team in Training was out on a run preparing for an October marathon in the city.

HorseAfter the ride it was back home to get ready for a day at Bay Meadows with the boys. Shull, Lewellyen and I had passes, thanks to our friend Richard who is a VP out at the track. We got a great table in the clubhouse, bet the races, had a couple of cocktails, ate lunch, watched the Giants beat the Dodgers on Pedro Feliz’s Grand Salami!! WOOHOO!! Richard even gave us some cool gifts! Nice set of Bay Meadows coffee cups for each of us. He’s a great guy, thanks Richard. I usually reserve about $40 to bet on the races. I was having an up and down day and by the 9th race I was down to my last $10. Hit a nice little exacta and won $30 back ending up the day only $10 down. Not bad at all! All in all Great day at the track with the boys.

While the boys were are the races, the girls were at the mall. Shopping for homecoming dance dresses for Kate and Nicole.

Then it was back to Shull House (the east bays premier dining experiance) for cocktails and a “South Beach” dinner of steak, salmon, salad and vegies. YUMMY YUM YUM YUM. Really hit the spot. Had a nice visit with Al and Deb. We don’t see them as much as we should. We always have a good time with them.

Talk about getting the most out of a weekend day! We sure did!

Huskie Girls-Running it up

Huskie Girls-Running it up

FROM THE FREMONT ARGUS
GIRLS WATER POLO Washington 21, American 2

FREMONT — After back-to-back undefeated MVAL seasons, Washington showed no letdown in a 21-2 victory over American.

Eleven Huskies (1-0) scored. Kari Walsh led the way with six goals, while Lauren Millslagle added three.

Kelly Flaherty did all the scoring for the Eagles (0-1) with two goals.

Jim’s note: Kelly played a great game! She got elbowed in the nose once and poked in the eye. I think some of those Huskie Girls play dirty when they don’t have to. There is a difference between aggressive play and dirty play. I think some of the Huskie Girls cross the line once in a while. American obviously was outplayed in this game. The only upside for me is watching Kelly play great ball, scoring two goals, one on a penalty shot against a former St. Leonards classmate. YOU GO KELLY GIRL!

FC Extreme dominates Newark

FC Extreme dominates Newark

Fcfremont_main2_1FC Extreme under 19 girls took the field in less than perfect conditions this morning in a tough bout against the Newark Rebels. The predicted chance of rain resulted in a morning downpour that initially threatened play. With heavy rain right up until game time, the girls were faced with a sloppy field and slippery ball while dealing with a very physical Newark squad. Again our team was at bare minimum with only 11 players, while Newark hosted a full squad of 15. Im001874_1The Rebels scored early on a indirect kick after a questionable hand ball. Goalie Kate Flaherty then held the Newark girls scoreless the rest of the game recording several saves. Extreme answered shortly thereafter with a goal of their own, then went ahead for a 2-1 halftime lead. Physical play continued into the second half when a Newark girl was yellow carded for an illegal push then red carded for arguing with the referee. Fremont outplayed Newark the whole game and the final score of 6-1 proved it. Kelly played middle half back, took a couple of great shots but mostly just fed the ball to the forwards who scored and scored and scored! Fremont Extreme moves their record to 2-1-0 and prepares to host Danville October 2nd.

Kick back weekend

Kick back weekend

Im001874
Its a slow weekend for us. The only thing on the calendar is a soccer game Sunday at 10am. Girls are off to the boys water polo tourney at Newark Memorial high School today. Barb is up to the city for a briefing on the up coming 3-Day Breast walk. What to wear, what to pack, what to expect. Stuff like that. I’m home taking care of Niya. The weather turned this morning. Woke up to cloudy skies, wind and cold. Maybe summer is finally over. Slight chance of rain for the soccer game tomorrow.

FrankenNiya

FrankenNiya

Im003516Im003517 Our German Shepherd Niya tore a ligament in her knee chasing squirrels in our front yard. Poor thing was not getting any better so she had surgery yesterday to repair the knee. She’s out of action for at least a month and not a happy camper today. Not only is she faced with 4 weeks of recovery, but she also has to wear one of those radar dishes around her neck so she wont chew on her (26) stitches. Im003518_1I must say, we do get better TV reception when she wears that thing. She looks like she got run over by the lawn mower. Her hind leg is totally shaved as is her front paw for IV and neck for pain patch.

A free dog has never cost us so much money! $1400 for yesterday plus who knows how much more during recovery. And to think the vet was making us feel bad for not going for the $3500 surgery which has a higher success rate. What a rip. There oughta be a law

Im003498_1 In what is being described as a freak vacuum cleaner accident, luke the cat was found dead in the hallway early this morning. Oh wait. Never mind, he’s just napping.

Barb is one month away from her 3-day, 60 mile walk. We are still trying to find out what the route will be so we can go cheer her on. We know it starts in San Mateo and ends in Golden Gate Park. As soon as we find out I can let you all know and maybe you can join us. As she gets closer to the day, she is finding out more about the specifics and the logistics. They will be walking about 20 miles per day. Sleeping in tent cities at night. The are up at 5am each morning and have to be on the road by 7am. Barb’s biggest worry at this point is when she will be able to take a shower. I can imagine that the 1st twenty mile day is tough but not bad. The excitement and adrenaline are at high levels. The second day is the day you realize that its not all fun and games. You must have some blisters and/or sore muscles from the previous day. Waking up that 3rd morning with 20 miles in front of you must be difficult. like that last 2 miles of a marathon, you are operating on sheer will and determination. Barb’s fundraising efforts continue. She has already raised $1400 !! Only $600 to go to meet her goal. Thanks to everyone who has contributed. We’ve only asked our closest friends for support and you have all really come through. Thanks!

**UPDATE** Barb recently had another breast cancer scare. A mammogram detected a mass in her left breast. Since Barb is “high risk” the doctor recommended a lumpectomy, which was performed two weeks ago. The results came in last Thursday. Much to our relief the tumor was benign. THANK YOU LORD! Barb, a true breast cancer survivor will be doing the 3-day walk with a fresh little scar on her left breast.
