Sox In Six

White_sox_1 looking for a team to root for in the world series?  Take the White Sox who haven’t been to the big show since 1959.  THE YEAR I WAS BORN.  I think that if the Sox win it, the Giants would then be the team with the longest world series drought. YAY!

AJ Pierzinski who always seemed to he hitting into double plays with the Giants last year is the hero and leader of the upstart Sox. Another Giant connection is ex pitcher Bud Black , is the pale hose pitching coach. Go Sox.

Woodside Ride update

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and all the souls of the faithfully departed,  rest in peace.

Mentioned in the previous post that while on our ride we rode past an accident that had happenned about 30 minutes earlier.

From this morning’s SF Chronicle:

An avid bicyclist who was a popular fourth-grade teacher was killed Sunday while riding in Woodside when an out-of-town motorist ran his car into her while looking for a freeway on-ramp, police said Monday.

Michelle Mazzei’s death stunned the staff, students and parents of Oak Knoll Elementary School in Menlo Park, where the 34-year-old teacher had worked for 11 years.

“She was an outstanding teacher. It’s such a loss,” said assistant principal Maria Clemo. Authorities contacted school officials Sunday afternoon, and teachers gathered to phone parents and alert them before school resumed Monday morning. “We didn’t want anybody to show up today and not know what happened,” Clemo said.

Mazzei, from Redwood City, was wearing a helmet Sunday morning as she rode her bike along Woodside Road about 11 a.m., Lt. Lisa Williams of the San Mateo Sheriff’s Department reported. At the same time, Theodore Charles Thornbrough, 68, of Westminster, Colo., was driving his 1998 Mercedes on Woodside Road, looking for the on-ramp to Interstate 280.

The driver told police that his attention had been diverted as he tried to read a roadway sign, and his car drifted into the bicycle lane, hitting Mazzei. She was taken to Stanford Hospital, where she died of her injuries, Williams said.

The 100 Miler – Santa Cruz – Half Moon Bay – Santa Cruz

Dsc02455_1 Back yesterday from our 2 day – 100 mile bike ride from Santa Cruz to Half Moon Bay to Santa Cruz. Turned out to be a great time and a great ride. Barb and I met up with Jens and Kelly, Diane and Colleen at Natural Bridges State park in Santa Cruz for the start of our ride on Friday morning. We hit the PCH  and peddled north towards Half Moon Bay. Start time was right around 10am. Jens got a flat about 5 miles into the ride but that was the only problem we had the whole trip.  The first 30 miles was mostly just rolling hills without any steep climbs.Dsc02457   The headwind that we battled the entire ride up did make things a bit tougher though. Probably averaged about 10 mph on the bike into a 10-15mph headwind. At times the wind was so strong that we had peddle hard going downhill. We stopped a few times along the way to regroup and rehydrate. Pumkin patches, corn mazes and farmland as well as miles of rugged coastline made the ride up a good one.

Sheryl Crow at the Greek

Sheryl_crow3 Went to see Sheryl Crow at the Greek Theater in Berkeley on Friday night. Long time friends Tim and Linda were along for the night as we boarded BART  for the train ride to downtown Berkeley. 45 minutes later we were walking up the hill, through UC Berkeley and into the Greek.  Since we had general admission tickets, and had blankets and seats in hand, we parked on the lawn at the top of the hill and settled in for a great night. Couple of beers and subway sandwiches as we waited for the show to start. Had a great spot to capture the ambiance of the night. Top row center, overlooking the beautiful Greek theater, the UC Berkeley campus, the city and beyond. When Sheryl Came out around 8:15, the fog was rolling in, making things look really cool. Kind of like a huge dry ice machine blowing fog over the entire city as the stage was bathed in lights. She mentioned a couple of times how cold she was, and she must’ve been. Wearing a sheer dress that was cut above the knee. Truthfully?  I only know a few Sheryl Crow songs. But I like her sound. We really enjoyed the evening.  Hanging with Linda and Tim is always fun.  Sometimes the  “to and from”  and “in between”  is better than the event itself.  This night it was all good.

Menopausal Moment

Play_004__small_ Sunday was the day for the big girly trip to the city. This one had been on Barb’s calendar for a while.  Barb’s buddy and 3-day walk partner Lisa, was treating seven girlfriends with a trip to the city to see Menopause -The Musical,  at the Pier 39 Theather. They left out of Fremont around 11:30 for the planned drive into the city. Lisa had a crew of 4 when she arrived at our house and picked up a couple more along the way.  Lunch at the Hard Rock San Francisco at Pier 39 and then off to front row seats for the 2pm show. Barb said the day was great. A fun bunch of gals to hang out with for the day. Great lunch and then a great show upstairs in the theater. I guess this crowd could relate to the menopause theme. : ) Either way, Barb came home all excited about her day in the city with girlfriends. Thanks to Lisa for putting it together! You rock Lisa!

Kate and Kyle

Dsc02508 Kate, our high school senior, was involved with homecoming activities this weekend. The homecoming game pitting American against Mission was a blowout on Friday night.  Eagles romped 52-7.

The homecoming dance on Saturday night. She looked so beautiful on Saturday as she headed out the door to her last homecoming dance.  Kate and Kyle have been going out for over a year now and he can still bring a smile to her face.

Got Wood?

Dsc02493_3  Got a load of  firewood dumped on the driveway yesterday.  Spent the rest of the day  (in between working)  stacking it in the side yard.  We are good to go for the winter!. Love Hillerman’s wood. Split seasnoned almond that gives a great burn.

Guard dog on duty

Fremont to Woodside Ride

Im002485 On Saturday we were supposed to go on the “Tour de Vine” in Livermore. An organized 50 mile ride that started and ended at some winery in Livermore. Tuesday we received word that the ride had been cancelled due to “unforeseen circumstances”. Oh Well. The bad thing about this was that the Tour de Vine and Mt Diablo Challenge were on the same weekend and we were flip flopping on which to do. I guess we chose the wrong one. To make up for it we decided to do something that we’d never done before. I had looked at a couple of options and decided to try a ride to Woodside.

Daly City Daze – 1961

Halloween_2 Halloween night on Fairlawn Ct.  Johnny Rezzonico clowning around in his living room as Santa Jimmy looks on.   I do have some memories of this night. Maybe seeing Johnny  in a clown outfit was what  stuck in my mind. I’m giving him a long hard look in this picture. I still have the Santa Suit.

EggMan and Sausage King – Reunited

Dsc02510 Saturday was a good day. Barb off early to hike mission peak with girlfriends. I went on a quick bike ride then started doing some cooking. After sending Kate off to the homecoming dance, we had the Shulls and Camellos over for cocktails and appetizers. Now that we have the kitchen remodeled and rest of the house done, no reason NOT to have people over. Dsc02511 This was actually a mini reunion of a pancake breakfast crew from  a church function years ago at St Leonard’s. That’s when we met Al Shull for the first time. Now all these years later, the EggmanDsc02512 (Al), the Sausage king (Mike) and pancake Jim are together again and partying strong! Had a great time visiting. We ate good (although it was with toothpicks) and ate plenty. Got to watch a little ‘hi-def” world series too. Played a little poker and a little stiffo. After coffee and dessert it was goodbye to all until next time. Cant wait for next time!!
