Sunol Regional Wilderness

Sunol Regional Wilderness

Cruised out to the Sunol Wilderness this weekend with hiking buds Marie and Ron.  I had never been there before but always wanted to go. We can see it when we hike Mission Peak. The “wilderness” to the east seems to go forever. We hiked up past an area called “Little Yosemite”,  a nice spot looking down at Alameda Creek as it works its way through a small canyon. Ron and Marie brought the family dog, Lydia, who had the best time of all. Into and out of the water, carrying a BIG stick most of the hike. One very happy black lab. We continued hiking up a trail and found a bench that looked back towards Mission Peak and the west. Sat there awhile and ate lunch. So beautiful up there on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Clear skies all around with a little wind kicking up towards the end of the hike.

Mission Peak Hike

Mission Peak Hike

Im003773_1 Got the hiking shoes back on yesterday and decided to hike Mission Peak.  Cold, windy and foggy as we started out at Im003788Ohlone College, the higher we got the better the weather got. The recent storm did some damage to the trail. A few downed tree limbs and one huge down tree.  By the time we got to the top it was BEAUTIFUL.Im003780  Sunny and warm with no fog.  We decided to have a break and our snack out at the place where the hang gliders take off. Felt good to get back out (up) there.  Afterwards we went to our local Starbucks, sat outside and had a coffee. By this time the fog had cleared and it was a beautiful sunny day in Fremont.

Undefeated American shuts out Kennedy

Undefeated American shuts out Kennedy

Dsc00237_1 The Lady Eagles continued their winning ways yesterday with a 7-0 route of the Kennedy Titans.  Kelly finally got some quality playing time and made it pay off. She was on fire!  She had an assist on the first goal, scored the second one,  assist on the third goal, then scored two more in the second half. A hat trick and two assists. You go girl! Kate went in to play goalkeeper about 10 minutes into the first half and played the rest of the game. She only got a couple of touches but did make them count. On a Kennedy corner kick that sailed in front of the goal, a Kennedy girl was able to get it and make a play. Kate made an outstanding save, just getting a hand on it and pushing the ball just wide enough to preserve the shutout. GREAT SAVE KATE!
The 7-0-1 Eagles remain in first place in MVAL competition.
In JV action, the girls mirrored the varsity girls by posting a 7-0 shutout. Nice job ladies!!

Eagles on a Roll – Sweep Mission

Eagles on a Roll – Sweep Mission

Ahsign_2 No game is a “gimme” this year, yet the American High girls continue to find ways to win.  In the last three games the girls have beaten Logan, Moreau Catholic (where Kelly scored on a sweet header off a corner kick, and Kate had 3 saves) and yesterdays win against Mission, which kicks off the second half of the season. The win against Mission makes for a sweep of the Warriors for the first time in recent memory.

MVAL record = 6-0-1.

Overall record = 11-4-1

In JV action, the Eagle girls won a 1-0 thriller against the lady Warriors JV squad. Way to go!!

This blurb from the mornings Fremont Argus:

American 2, Mission San Jose 1

FREMONT — Lauren Dubay scored both American goals to lead the Eagles (6-0-1) past the visiting Warriors (2-6).

With a break in MVAL play last Thursday, the first-place Eagles came into Tuesday’s match conscious of maintaining the momentum from the first half of the season.

“It was absolutely something we had talked about,” American coach Jerry Losson said. “We saw (Thursday’s) results from the other games, and they were opposite from what they were in the first half of the season.”

American — which defeated Mission 1-0 in the first game of league play — did not   falter in the rematch, with help from Dubay’s performance.

With the game tied 1-1 in the 55th minute, Dubay took a pass from Erin Vandenbusch and booted a 12-foot shot for a goal. Dubay also got the scoring started with an unassisted goal in the seventh minute.

Mission rallied to tie the game on a goal by Sarah Steele, off an Emily Chen pass 10 minutes before the end of the first period.

The victory continues American’s trend of winning close games. Five of American’s six wins have been by one goal.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help

Our Lady of Perpetual Help

Scan10017_2  Good old O.L.P.H.  Daly City California. We all went there as kids.  I think Anne Marie started out at OLM (Our Lady Of Mercy) right around the corner from our house but transferred after Mom had a fight with Father Powers over something or another. So OLPH was our school. Old, three story job built into the side of a mountain at “top of the hill” Daly City.  We used to wait for the bus right outside Duffy’s Tavern on Mission Street.  I was surfing the web the other day and found a request for alumni information at the Daly City History web page. Go figure! Anyway, OLPH is finally forming some sort of organized alumni foundation. I always wondered what happened to the good old class of 1973. John emailed me the baseball patches that he has kept for 40+ years.  The ’63 champs was probably the first and last time OLPH fielded a good team. You go bro!!

High Tide of the year

High Tide of the year

Im003705_2 Mentioned in a earlier post that bike riding buddy Steve had told us that the “high tide of the century” would occur this morning. He even drew a “line in the sand” prediction out at the end of the trail when we rode out there on Saturday. I was planning on a bike ride today anyway so I figured I would time it to be out at the end of the Bay Trail right at high tide. The official tidal prediction from the Chronicle was 7.3 ft at 10:32 AM. As I’m getting ready I get a call from the Kahuna Im003698_1 who was also interested in checking out high tide. We hooked up and headed the short way out to Coyote Hills and onto the Alameda Creek Trail.  We actually got seperated for a short while when the Kahuna decided to take his bike on State Highway 84 rather than on the bike path. I turned right, he went straight, right onto the freeway!!! He said he missed the turn but I think he wanted to do some extreme biking. Either way, we hooked back up and made our way out to the end of the Im003708a trail. Although the tide was very high, with lots of “moving water”, it was no where near where chief metoerologist and tidal forecaster, Vandenbush, had predicted. Although a bit cloudy and cold out there, the sun did manage to pop out while we were there. Great shot of the Kahuna at the end of the rainbow.  How sweet it is.

Dodging Raindrops on the Creek Trail

Dodging Raindrops on the Creek Trail

Im003687 At the soccer game against Washington the other day, made a pact with the buddies Camello and Vandenbush to go on a ride this morning, rain or shine. Didn’t look good early with rain showers in the forecast and wind gusts toIm003689_1   40mph. Either way, headed out to the trail at nine o’clock and met up with Mike and Steve. Alameda creek was running fast and was as high as I had ever seen it. All the dams must’ve been down clear up to Niles Canyon. Since the trail was pretty wet, we decided to just ride out to the end of the trail and back. Doing any hills, especially heart-attack, would be hazardous on a day like today. Im003696_1 No Rain and a nice tail wind on the way out. By coincidence, before I left this morning, I heard on the news that a very high tide was going to be occurring Im003693_1 at the same time we were riding.  You could really tell as we rode out past the last overpass and into the east bay wilderness. I’ve never seen the creek as high as it was. Amazing!  Steve said that the “high tide of the century was going to be on Monday at 11AM. I told him I’d try to make it out there and see how high.
The ride back was a bit windy and rainy, nothing too bad though. Right at Decoto road I got a flat!!! UGH!!! Hate when that happens.  Thanks to the Vandenbush, Camello, Flaherty pit crew, I was patched and back on the road in no time. Made it to Starbucks for a well deserved cup of “house drip”. The sun even  came out as we were sitting there!! HOW SWEET IT IS.

The Real Deal- Eagles win a BIG one

The Real Deal- Eagles win a BIG one

Argusarticle_2 I mentioned in the previous post that the American High girls Varsity soccer team was going to play the Washington Huskies in the MVAL “game of the week.” Washington has always been the Eagles nemises,  so a win on the Huskies home turf would be sweet. And how sweet it was!  The girls played a scoreless first half then came out and scored twice in the second half. Being  up 2-0 is HUGE in soccer. That one goal cushion came in handy as the Huskie Girls put plenty of pressure on and eventually got one by. Gabby had a “career game” in goal, just when it was needed, recording 20 saves. As the final whistle blew the score was 2-1. EAGLES WIN .  The 4-0-1 Eagles play Logan at Logan next week to wrap up the first half of the season. These girls ARE the real deal!

In JV action, the American girls played great and won 4-1.

This is the first time in recent memory that the girls have traveled to Washington and come home with wins for both JV and Varsity!  NICE JOB LADIES!!

First Place Eagles Win Again

First Place Eagles Win Again

Eagles_1   The American High Lady Eagles continued their winning ways today with a 1-0 victory over the Newark Memorial Cougars. Rain fell for most of the game making the ball slick and the already saturated field even more so.  The Eagles started in fine form by putting pressure on early in the match. The ball was mostly on the Cougar side of the field for most of the first half. Sapna Sethi had a great shot that went high just over the post, then a few minutes later found herself again in front of the goal and was able to put it in. GOAL!!!!  The Eagles went into the half with a 1-0 lead. The Cougars came out in the second half determined to even the score. They constantly put the pressure on by keeping the ball in Eagle territory for most of the 2nd half. Goalie_6 Several shots on goal were denied by the Eagle defense, including a couple of nail biters that looked for sure like they were going to go in. The Eagle girls played great defense and time after time cleared the ball. The win gives the American girls a 3-0-1 record and first place in MVAL play. The game this Thursday against arch rival Washington may be the game of the year and at the very least, a pivotal match in determining who is the team to beat this year in the Mission Valley Athletic League.  So far it looks like our girls are the real deal. In JV action, the American girls lost a 1-0 heartbreaker. A great game at 0-0 until the final minute when the Cougars put one in the Eagles goal on a corner kick.
