Crow Chronicles

A couple of months has passed since the last Crow Chronicle. Since then I have been pretty consistent in walking Sweetheart to the Creek Trail every morning.  Most every morning they seem to see me before I see them. Many times Buddy (alpha) will fly in right in front of me and wait for a nut. Other times it will be when I get to the creek trail and one, two or more will show up and land on the railings. I toss peanuts for them and they scoop them up happily.  Sometimes they will get a mouthful (three unshelled peanuts is the record) and fly off to the other side of the creek and bury them in the grass. Until recently I thought they did that to retrieve them later when needed, but I read somewhere that crows also bury them to attract worms and other bugs so they can eat those! Either way they are getting more than enough peanuts to eat. I just changed from dry roasted unsalted to raw unsalted and I’m not to sure the gang likes them as much.

Speaking of the gang. I really don’t like the term murder. I think of them more as a family. Especially our little bunch. When we first started feeding them it seemed like it was always one crow (later to be named Buddy) that would show up on our dog walks. Occasionally after that maybe just one more (later called Momma) and rarely three more. Never more than five. I’ve figured that it’s Buddy and and Momma and the extended family. Maybe a few
crazy teenagers who only come home when they are hungry! When all five show up you can certainly tell that Buddy is the biggest and baddest of the bunch. If there are multiple peanuts about he gets first dibs on all he can stuff in his mouth. If anyone else (including Momma) tries to get a nut he will give them a squawk and muscle his way over them. They give a subservient squawk (more like a whine).  No worries because everyone gets their share in the end.

Since I put a small bowl on our mailbox outside they have started to show up at the house more often. Never the whole family. Mostly just Buddy but the last few days I have seen the Mr and Mrs fly in together to see whats cooking in the bowl.  They even started to open the peanuts and wash them in our fountain out front! I had a bowl full of peanut shells in there last time I went to check it.  I also saw Buddy eating and cleaning a small frog in our fountain. Anything we can do to help!

Still waiting on the crow treasure reciprocation that is supposed to take place. Although one windy morning a few weeks back Buddy had a red tail hawk feather in his grasp. He even twirled it to check it out. Unfortunately it blew away when he ditched it for a peanut. I did get a picture of it though!

My new favorite crow pic is the one at the top of this story. It hard getting good pictures because I usually have Sweetheart with me on walks and Willow is always hanging out on the porch or driveway.  I had put some peanuts in the mailbox bowl and was getting ready to head to the store. I was pulling the car out of driveway when they both show up. Buddy is at the mailbox and I’m in the street hoping cars don’t come while I’m fumbling to get my camera ready. Just as as I was clicking he took off. Turned our to be a winner through. Mouthful of peanuts and flying off. What I like is that it’s a great picture of our house too!

Crow Chronicles

This just happened. I had two peanuts on the end of the rail. I was porch sitting with sweetheart and Willow. When Barb brought Opal out. That causes Willow to skedaddle. Almost right after, Buddy the crow swoops down, sees two dogs on the porch and pulls up and lands on the roof. I held the dogs and sure enough Buddy comes down to the rail and takes a peanut and the other one fell on the porch. Right when this was happening Richard and Liam come home next door and are getting out of there car. Just then Willow takes off across the street at the same time Buddy is taking his peanut back to the creek. Willow is almost across the street and buddy swoops down to mess with Willow causing her her scoot under the trailer at Barry’s house. Richard saw it and said woah! I couldn’t believe it!  I mistakenly called Willow back and as she was crossing the street Buddy and his buddy both ganged up and went after Willow, chasing back across the street this way! It’s crazy!

Meet the Neighbors!

Your neighbors are just like the box of chocolates in Forrest Gump. You never know what you’re  going to get!  We got lucky!!  When we moved here to the beach, for the first few months we were only coming on weekends and then spent the week at Kate and Frank’s. We hadn’t met any of our neighbors yet since we weren’t there that often. We first met Richard of Julia and Richard (they live next door to the left).   We had a ring doorbell installed when we moved in and one day we were back at the ranch in Live Oak when the ring alarm went off. We pulled up the camera and see some guy doing something in the front of our house. We weren’t sure who he was or what he was doing so I turned on the speaker part of the ring and ask “hello, can we help you?” He didn’t know where the voice was coming from so we asked again. I think only then did he realized the voice was coming from the doorbell. “just picking up leaves from our tree”. And that was the first encounter with Richard next door. Next time we were at the beach and saw him outside we went out to introduce ourselves and apologize in person for our spying on him.  Richard and Julia have been living at the beach for a while. Both PHDs who worked at Mayo clinic. They have two sons, Noah and Liam.  Since then we have got to know them a lot better. Richard is a great guy. He mows our lawn for us when he is mowing his lawn! He even put up our back fence for us because ours was falling down and he had extra fence panels. Julia comes over for the occasional wine night.  Great neighbors!!

We met Maria and Cory when we were getting the HUGE Live Oak tree trimmed in our back yard. This tree is one of the reasons I loved this house so much. The branches cover most of our house and back yard and provide ever needed shade during summer months. It also hangs over into Maria and Cory’s yard to the right providing them with much needed shade also. But I knew nothing about these trees so we had an arborist come and check it out and give it a trim. The tree got a clean bill of health and they did trim some of the branches. When they were done they knocked on the door to let us know that when they were up in the tree trimming that they noticed a couple of holes on our neighbors roof and that they placed a note at there door to let them know.  Either that day or the next we met Maria. She came over to get some more information on what the tree trimmers said.  Long story short (and contrary to what Cory might say) there were holes in their roof that were caused by tree branches from the tree in our backyard. Like a branch had grown over and eventually just rested on their roof. I guess over time it caused a hole. As much as Cory would like it if it was our tree at the time Google earth clearly shows the holes before either of us moved in. Fortunately for Maria and Cory the hole was over the overhang part so any rain did not get in the house. Side Note:  They paid for home inspection before they bought and the “inspector” missed it. Jerk.  We officially met Cory a day or two later in our driveway.  Maria the ICU nurse and Cory the Nurse Practitioner. Boy did Barb luck out there!

So there they are. Maybe the two best next door neighbors we could EVER expect to have.  Just google  “neighbors from hell” and you’ll see what I mean.  We’ve been here five years now and the bond has grown stronger.  Not only neighbors but dear dear friends. Its made life at the beach and life in general just that much better. We are the old couple of the bunch. Everyone’s kids range from sweet Ada (who steals our heart) who’s around 3 to Noah on the other side of us who is off to Florida State. So the 30-40s on the right and the 40-50s on the left, and us old folks in the middle, and kids all around. Right where we want to be!

Jax Beach Jimmy

What a strange wonderful trip its been.

I’ve been promising myself that I would bring jimsjoint back to life in some form or another.  There is so much that has happened the last few years that I have neglected to comment on for one reason or another. Then a couple of months ago I at least attempted to start a new page that could document our life here in Florida. Then it was a matter of where to start.  In my mind it should start with our cross country drive from Fremont to Live Oak. I will tell that story here soon. Also the great 18 months we lived with Kate and Frank and Parker in our new 38 foot travel trailer and the times with Parker for those first 6 months that I wasn’t working. So much fun!  Or how about my great job with the Florida Highway Patrol?  So many stories to tell.  Our house hunting that resulted in us living at the beach!  Our wonderful new friends and neighbors. Where to begin? Where to Begin?

All of these were worthy starting points for the new jimsjoint, but for some reason I still didn’t feel like the Jax Beach Jimmy that I needed to be.  Then I landed a sweet little “glide into retirement” job here at the beach and I felt that I was finally home.  Talk about luck of the Irish.  My dream had been to work my last years in the work force close to home. Someplace low stress and rewarding.  Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s would have been cool, but our local liquor store seemed like a cool gig.  I emailed the company and asked if they were hiring at the Jacksonville Beach Store. Within 10 minutes I got a reply telling me to call the manager.  They offered me the job after the interview. Broudy’s Liquors is a family owned chain of 5 stores, mostly in St Augustine. The Jax Beach store is great. Right on the border of Jax Beach and Ponte Vedra.  Broudy’s motto is Life’s short, Drink Better. To that end they carry a great selection of beer, wine and liquor.  You can buy a $2 can of Bud Light or a $3800 bottle of scotch.  I’m so lucky to be working there. A great bunch of guys are teaching me the business.  The cool thing is that Broudy’s has a drive thru!  Thanks to friends and neighbors Cory and Maria for snapping the photo of me working the drive through!!

So my little retirement gig (hey! I’m only 62 so still a few more years until REAL retirement) is perfect. Only a mile and a half from home to work (instead of 82 miles when doing the FHP commute) and only 4 minutes when I hit all the lights green!!  Compared to 80 minutes doing the FHP commute.  I haven’t filled the tank in the truck for two months!!  Barb and I are grateful to Kate and Frank for the hospitality, the FHP for taking a chance on me, for the support from family and friends from afar.  So we are really settling in to beach life now and that’s where we will start our blog. We’ll look back and look forward to bridge all the gaps from “our life and times in the wild wild west” to #jaxbeach jimmy.

We are home!!

Riding the Wave

My Dad was a career Safeway employee. 45 years with the same company.  Started as a buyer and ended up as an HR manager and international president of the Safeway Employee Association. During his years with Safeway he is also credited with starting the Safeway Credit Union. Most of his later career, he commuted to Oakland from our house in Daly City.  This was before BART and when bridge toll at the Bay Bridge was a quarter.  Dad was the last of the old breed of management. Worked his way up through the ranks along with everyone else. No college degree, just common sense and good judgement. I know the cost of living was low back then but Dad sure didn’t make the big bucks. I saw some of his W2 forms after he passed away and he wasn’t making much.    When he finally retired, the “new” breed was beginning to take over. The kids with college degrees were moving in and moving up. These are the guys that started making the big bucks. Peter Magowan, Part Owner of the San Francisco Giants was working for Safeway when Dad retired. Peter eventually became CEO of Safeway at the time when upper management of large corporations were starting to make large salaries and wage disparity started to grow.   Dad is lucky he got out when he did.  You don’t see many 45 year employees at any company these days. Fortunately for him, mom and us, He saved his money.  He  started doing a new fangled thing called payroll deduction. Rather than give you a paycheck, they put it right in the bank for you! He also invested. In Safeway, in stocks, and even in limited partnerships. When going through his things after he passed, he was buying limited partnerships in Embassy Suites back in the day! Whatever he did, it worked.  For a guy that never made over 35k a year, he was able to save and invest to where he and mom had a net worth of over one million dollars at retirement.

Dad also invested in us. His kids. Nobody is perfect and neither was dad. But he and mom loved us probably more than we can ever know. Growing up we had what seemed like a good life. Like everyone, we can see in retrospect that it wasn’t all good all the time. We had ups and downs and problems that most families have. The saying, “be kind, for everyone you know is fighting a great battle”, is so true. And true for everyone. Two things come to mind about dad as I write about riding the wave. Work ethic and saving. Dad showed by example and had a 45 year career to show for it.  Get up every morning, shower and shave and put that suit on and commute and then work work work.  Repeat for 16,425 days.   Perhaps his great advise was to use that payroll deduction. “You don’t see the money so you don’t miss it”

I think I’ve written about this before, but when I got out of the Army in 1981,  my childhood friend handed me a stack of applications that he had picked up while job hunting in what was the new Silicon Valley.  Since I was a military policeman in the Army, I was looking for corporate security jobs.  The applications I submitted resulted in a few interviews but the one I got a call back for was at Avantek Inc.  My interview there was ok. The lady asked me if I knew was a semiconductor was. No. But I got a job offer anyway!  I had been living at mom and dad’s house in Rohnert Park for the couple of months I had been out of the Army, but when I landed the job in Santa Clara, my sissy let me live with them in Palo Alto for a while until I could get on my feet.

Avantek security was ok. I started on  midnight shift and was trained by Carl Devoll.  A great guy that taught me a lot about the job specifics. On the graveyard shift there was plenty of time to talk in between security rounds. I eventually worked all shifts and all positions and was working my way up. I worked in the command center and had 4 security guards that I supervised. It was during this time that I not only met my future wife, but also some of my closest and life long friends.

Barb was a computer operator on the 2nd floor of building three. I was on the first floor of building one. But lucky for me one of the many security cameras that I had to monitor was in the computer room so I got to watch Barb (and her coworkers) whenever I wanted.  Coincidentally it was the same time that the Police released the song I’ll be watching you”, so I used to joke with her about that all the time.  The Command center was also a little bit of a hang out for employees. Everyone in the building had to pass the command center to leave building one, so I got to know almost everyone eventually.  Linda Yan was one of those that would always stop by to chat. Her boyfriend Tim Lobert worked in B-3 and we became and continue to be great friends. By the time I wore Barb down enough to have her agree to go on a date with me,  Tim and I were room mates living the 80’s dream  in a two bedroom apartment in Sunnyvale.

Barb and I and Tim and Linda became great friends. Like the Gatsbys!!  Parties after work and all weekend long. So many great memories were made and so many we cant remember! Tim and Linda stories reserved for another post!

After a year or so in Security I got a job in MIS ( what is now called information technology) as a computer operator. Barb was my boss!! Well, my dotted line boss anyway. But it was the real beginning of my IT career. Working on a Unisys 2200/400 mainframe computer. Disk drives, tape drives, huge printers. The computer room was a large space. Today all that technology can fit on a desktop, but back then it was state of the art. Again. I worked all shifts, weekend and holidays too, and was promoted up. At some point I left computer operations and became a network technician, setting up modems, and data lines between buildings and facilities. Avantek at the time had locations in Santa Clara, Milpitas, Folsom and Newark. I had a good job, married my sweetheart,  and was working with good people. Life was good!

Right after my 10th anniversary with Avantek,  BOMBSHELL!  Avantek was purchased by Hewlett Packard!!  Nothing changed at first. Still had the same immediate management chain with some new HP folks up top, but HP had bought us for its technology so not too much was going to change.  At this point in time HP was a great company to work for. The founders were retired but still on the board and still active in the overall management of the company.  I was lucky enough to be able to work at the Newark facility which was 5 minutes from home.

All was going on smoothly, my job enabled me to pick up Kelly and Kate from School everyday and the flexible hours meant I went on almost every field trip while they were in grammer school. It was great. I was working hard and getting good pay. Overtime on the weekends whenever I wanted it. At this point I was the IT guy for the Newark facility.  Then in 1999, BOMBSHELL. Newly appointed HP CEO Carly Fiorina decided to “spin-off” the semiconductor, test and measurement and anything else not PC/ Printer or storage related. Agilent technologies was created and I was part of the deal. I  became an Agilent employee (but still held onto my time of service and all). I was a little upset that I was no longer an HP employee but the job remained the same so I was good. Then a few years later, BOMBSHELL.  Agilent was outsourcing its IT services back to HP. HP had just started a new business. IT service management. You worry about your core business and let HP worry about your IT needs.   My head was spinning but bottom line I was going back to HP and supporting Agilent.  Still same desk, hours, but now a different management chain.  I just put my head down, did my job and rode the wave. On the bad side of things, Carly Fiorina was a huge fan of  low overhead. Save money by getting rid of people or by shifting American jobs overseas.  So that meant many of my friends, colleagues and pears were “work force managed”.  A fancy term for laid off, canned, let go. Better and smarter people than I were let go without as much as a “thank you for your 25 years of service”.  This is the dawn of the era where all sorts of jobs left  for India, China, and all points not the USA.  From here on out, the constant threat of losing your job loomed out there like an executioners axe just waiting to fall. Every month end, quarter end or year end press release would say that the only way for the company to do what’s right for its stockholders is to reduce costs. And the best and easiest way to do that was to  reduce headcount or move your job to a “low cost country”

By this time, I was a Vendor Manager, and for whatever reason, that was one of the few positions that they chose to keep local.  Soon after I started working from home full time. I was doing it part time for a while but with all the confusion and management musical chairs that was going on, I was frustrated. When they sent out a form to ask where I worked I put “Work from home”. From then on I was classified as such and spent the next 12 years doing just that. Working from home.

The bombshells were dropping on a regular basis in the years after, and always with the constant threat of lay off.  Eventually, Agilent went looking for a better outsourcing deal and HP lost the contract.  In the last days, I sent out an email to all my HP and Agilent contacts letting them know the situation and that I was looking for work.  Thats when Will Mawhiney saved the day.  I had never met Will face to face. I had talked to him on the phone and been on many conference calls with him over the years. He worked in Colorado Springs and was the guy in charge of the call centers. I dealt with him because I was in charge of the voice and data cabling installers for all facilities in the USA. I sent out my “I’m looking for work” email and a couple days later he responded “I’m shopping you around”

Turns out Will had left the Agilent account and was working on the newly acquired and HUGE Proctor and Gamble account.  HP had  bought Ross Perot’s EDS and one of their outsourcing accounts was Proctor and Gamble. P&G is one of the largest companies in the world so you can imagine that their voice and data needs are great. Will was recently brought onto the P&G team because HP had just won back the voice business that they had lost a few years earlier. Its confusing but whatever. Will was looking for a configuration manager (whatever the hell that is). Well, whatever it was, I was Will’s man.  He got to choose and he chose me. I learned to be a configuration manager and did so for the next 5 years.  HP in their wisdom decided to focus on PCs and Printers only so they did a spinoff. I went to the newly formed HPE ( Hewlett Packard Enterprise ) and continued to work on the P&G account.  HPE in their great wisdom determined that they did not want to be a “services” company any longer so they did a “spin-merge” with Computer Science Corporation and form a new company called DXC Technologies where I continued to work on the P&G account.  For some reason, when we became DXC, I thought it was a good thing. We were the new “pure services” company and had the huge P&G account. I thought I might be set to ride the wave into retirement just like dear old dad!

DXC had different ideas. Will had always been honest about what he knew was going on with headcounts and WFM and what management was deciding about human resources. He told me my name had come up as a possible layoff candidate and that he had fought to keep me. It worked for a while.  Last year, in mid July, after 5 years on the P&G account, the writing was on the wall. Will said that its only a matter of time. My job was being outsourced to Germany. He also said they are not even giving two week notices anymore, so you can expect a call and be expected to be out that day or that week. So on Monday  August 7th last year Will gave me the heads up to expect a call. Later that morning I got a call from my “manager” (who I had never spoken to until this day)  telling me that he is sorry and bla bla bla, yadda yadda  yadda, your last day is Friday.  Since I knew this was coming I was fortunate enough to be able to prepare some choice words for my manager that I had never met nor spoken to, who was laying off a 35 year employee with 4 days notice.  August 11th was my last day and my first day. The last day riding the wave. That wave anyway. But it was also the first day of paddling out to catch the next wave. The wave that brought me and Barb to Florida and the precious time that we get to spend with our grandson.

Thank God dad’s talk about payroll deduction stuck with me. Lots of things happened over those 35 years. Married Barb. Had two great kids in Kelly and Kate. Bought a house and made friends and memories that last a lifetime.  Made some good and bad financial decisions.  But thanks to Dad, I did put some money away every paycheck..

I never had a do a resume in my life up until late last year. Even though my work experience  looks somewhat diverse by working for Avantek, HP, Agilent, HPE and DXC, in actuality, I really never left my desk!   Because of the mergers, spinoffs, aquistions, spin mergers, and all  I never lost my years of service. Not that it did me any good in the end, its just weird.

The last year has been the next wave.  When I woke up on Saturday august 12 2017 I was unemployed for the first time since March 1982.  Things changed but they were about to change even more!

Mike Pearson – Mr. P – rest in peace

It was sad news last month when I heard that Mike Pearson had passed away.  Mike, along with his brother Dan, were original Fairlawn Court kids.  Part of our neighborhood group that all grew up together in Daly City.  All the families moved to Fairlawn Ct at the same time. All products of post WWII baby boomer expansion.  Mike was a good guy growing up. Always happy and never a bully (he was  2 years older).  In memory of Mike, were are a few pictures that I found of the good old days back on Fairlawn Court.  Here is Mike , up front,  with John Rezzonico Danny and I.

All my memories of Mike are good ones. Riding bikes, playing Hot Wheels, or just good old fashion games of tag or hide and seek.  Greg, Mike, Danny and Joan.

A young Mike in black bathing suit ready to dive in

I love this one. Mike and I in Rita’s pool. We are only goofing around  here. the sign behind us says ” I DON’T SWIM IN YOUR TOILET SO PLEASE DON’T PEE IN MY POOL”

Like most, we all grew up and grew apart. After High School I went into the Army and never really went back to Daly City much.  My folks had moved and the old court wasn’t the same anymore.

Went to a little memorial picnic this weekend hosted by Mike’s brother Dan.  It was nice to catch up and share memories of Mike and our Life on Fairlawn Ct,  since we had last seen each other 40 years ago.  There were some of Mike’s life long friends there. Mike had a good life with good friends. Was a cook in the Army and loved motorcycles.  Him and his friends were Russian River enthusiasts who spent many summers at the river.  They all called him “Mr P”.  Sounded like a good life,  except for the cigarette smoking that finally caught up to him.  I never know that Mike. the Mike that I knew you see in these pictures, and that’s how I will remember him. Rest in Peace Mike.

Parker Turns Two

We went back to North Carolina for Parker’s birthday. Did the red eye out of San Jose on a Sunday night then spent seven days visiting with Kate and Frank and Parker. We spent 4 nights at Kate and Franks house then three nights at the nearby Hilton suites. I wanted to get a hotel so that we could spend some pool time with Parker.  Its something I did with my dad and what we did with the girls when they were young. Our Embassy suites weekends were the best!

Anyway, it was a great trip. When we got to Kate and Frank’s, they had a batch of eggs in an incubator that were just getting ready to hatch. There was a mixture of duck eggs and Guinea hen eggs, about 20 in all, and over the next 7 days just about all of them hatched. There turned out to be a few “duds” but other that that it was non stop egg hatching. After the egg hatched in the incubator,  we gave the new born about 30 minutes to get his/her bearings and dry off a bit, then we would put them into the big box that had all the chicks/ducks with water and feed.  Parker was all thrilled with watching the the little ones in the  box. We all did. There was even one night that we had to stay up late because a duck was hatching and Kate didn’t want it in the incubator all night. It was all about the chicks and ducks with Parker until Frank came in one morning and said that he just killed a snake.

Frank found a copperhead over by the air conditioner unit outside the house. After he came in to tell us and we all went out to check it out, Parker was all about the “shnake”.  He kept wanting to go out and see the “shnake”. Even after Frank had skinned it. “Shnake, shnake shnake”!!

But even with all the chicken, duck and snake activity, for us, it was all about Parker. PARKER TIME!!

He is such a great kid. So handsome, so smart and like a sponge!  He is learning, talking and doing more every day! Kate still had school during the week so we got to spend a lot of quality time with Parker.

Speaking of Kate’s school, we got to go visit her in her classroom one day!  We were out and about with Parker and she said we could drop by during their lunch break to check things out and visit for a bit.  Coastal Carolina Community College is right in town so it was easy for us. We got to see the “nerve center” of the paramedic program there. We also got to meet most of her classmates, who were all so nice and all loved Parker!  We are both so proud of Kate. Those classes she is taking are not easy so she is really hitting the books and studying hard. The hard work is paying off. She is doing real well and is expected to graduate next May! Way to go Katie!

We checked into the Hilton suites in Jacksonville on Friday afternoon. Nice place on 4th floor. Big enough to have his birthday party there.  We took Parker swimming in the pool. I’m really glad we ended up getting a place with an indoor pool.  North Carolina summers are hot and HUMID, so it was a plus that we were indoors. The other nice thing was that nobody else was using the pool. We had it all to ourselves most of the time!

Parker turns out to be a water bug!! After he got used to the water he was loving it!! He was a little surprised when he got  water in his mouth, but did great otherwise.  He would jump in holding my hands, then kick kick kick those legs as I helped him over to the ladder. He would climb up all by himself and almost jump back in before I could get to him! So happy and proud to be swimming with my grandson!

Parker spent the night with us on Saturday. It not only gave Kate and Frank a MUCH needed break, it gave us more time with Parker. Since Parker is not the best at going to sleep and sleeping through the night, we figured it would be a challenge. Turns out it wasn’t too bad. We stayed up late watching TV.  Twenty years ago it was me and the girls watching Boy Meets World. Now its me and Parker watching Girl Meets World! Parker eventually got so sleepy that we were able to put him in between us in our bed. Parker and I slept pretty good. Barb, not so well. Parker would wake a little or toss and turn and Barb was right there to sooth him and settle him down.

Sunday was party day!!  Kate had done all the pre-planning so it all fell into place well.  At about 1pm people started to show up.  I think there were about 6 kids and 10 adults when the party started rolling.  We had some snacks then headed down to the pool for a quick swim.  It looked like everyone was having a great time!  Back up to the room after an hour for cake and presents.  It was so cool to see Parker interacting with the other kids. I love that kid!!

Sadly, Sunday was our last full day. Even though  we had an afternoon flight, we thought that Frank had to work and Kate and Parker both had school. Parker by the way was moving up to the “under 3” class!! Turned out that Frank had the day off so we were able to meet one more time for lunch before we headed to the airport. Before we knew it we were back on the plane for the long ride home. Missing that kid already!!

Thank God for pictures and videos to keep those memories alive. Check out some the pictures by clicking here.

Return to the Mother Ship

Its was a crazy couple days.  Wednesday morning I was working as usual when I got a dreaded “blue screen of death” on my company laptop. The BSOD is not always fatal. It does cause a “hard stop” on your computer where you are forced to restart the machine. Many times you can restart and not have any more problems. Not this time.  When I tried to restart I would only be able to start in “safe mode”. A mode that lets you get on your computer but with very limited functionality.  After working with the HP help-desk remotely things only got worse. So bad in fact that the laptop would not fully boot up any longer. UGH!!  So I couldn’t access email, tools, anything. I was screwed.  No other options other than to  scheduled an appointment to get the machine fixed next morning at HP headquarters in Palo Alto.

So for the first time in years I was going to the office, in commute traffic no less! It really wasn’t that bad. only took about 40 minutes to travel 15 miles to the office.  I dropped off the laptop at the IT help station. The guys there said it would take about 4 hours to re-image the laptop and get everything working correctly again.  So with a little time on my hands I went looking for my buddy Joe. Unfortunately he was not in the office yet. I took a long walk around the facility, had a cup of coffee. Joe eventually got to work and I hung out with him for awhile. After soup and salad lunch in the cafeteria my laptop was ready for pickup. Back home in no time! Thanks to Barb for taking a picture of me ready to go to work.

The Cutting of the Sod

Work continues out front.  Up early and over to Cresco rents to pick up a sod remover. Spent the next few hours cutting  the 1250 square feet of sod. In case you don’t know, thats a lot of sod! Very heavy sod. Thankfully I had some help today. Mando and Vandy were both on hand to help out.   The global landscaping crew.  The Irishman, a Mexican and a Belgian.  Glad to have friends like this.

Even though we had the sod removing machine, it was still hard work!  Just holding that monster still and keeping it going straight was a chore.  Plus we had to move the sod once it was cut so that the machine could make a good cut on the next pass.  After we cut the sod we had to figure out how to get it the hell out of here. We discussed it over turkey sandwiches that Barb made.  Do it yourself was a no go. Too much work.   We made the trip to Home Depot and hired some day labor to help us out. Two guys with a truck. Mando did the talking and we settled on the deal. It took them 4 hours and three dump runs  to clear the lawn of all  the sod, plus take away all the old wooden borders and plastic paper that was under all that pea gravel I moved earlier in the week.

So at the end of the day today we have a nice flat patch of dirt out front.Onward to tomorrow!! Looking good Bruno!
