MVAL – Newark Relays
The 2005 high school swim season began today as it always does, with the Newark Relays. All seven teams in the MVAL come together at Newark Memorial High School to swim a myriad of relay events. School spirit is on the line. We expected some warm weather but the fog never burned off, so it was a little chilly most of the morning. The girls were actually up and out around 6am in preparation for the day. Kate and Nicole off to IHOP to carbo-load, Kelly and Stefani to the pool to reserve a “choice spot”. Kelly and Stefani are varsity girls team captains this year to the largest swim team ever at American High. Kate earned a spot on the varsity team this year as a long distance swimmer. Her main event this year is the 500 freestyle. The highlight of the day today for us was the girls varsity 400 free relay. Kate and Kelly on the same team with Kate’s best friend Nicole and Kelly’s best friend Stefani. It felt like I had four daughters swimming in the same race ! The first and probably last time Kate and Kelly will swim together in a High School relay. The girls probably didn’t realize it or care, but I thought it was a great and special moment. Cool to watch! I guess as our kids get older its the opposite of when they were young. We would treasure their
first game, first goal, first hit. As they finish up the high school years I am treasuring their last goal, last game, last swim. Time sure did fly by when you look back on all those seasons of sports. Soccer, softball, water polo, volleyball, basketball and swimming.

MVAL championships are May 14th, same day as Kelly’s senior ball. It’s gonna be fun!
