Halloween – 1960- Safeway News

Pumkin1_1Halloween 1960. Dad was an executive at Safeway stores and worked at the HQ in Oakland. The Safeway News was an employee magazine/newsletter that was published monthly and sent to all Safeway employees across the country. The Safeway News staff was looking for an “all American family” Pumpkin2_1 to pose for some pumpkin carving pics to accompany an article on selling some pumpkins and trick or treat candy. They hired a professional photographer to come over our house and take pictures while we carved pumpkins at the kitchen table. We were all dressed up and sitting Safeway_news_3around dad while he carved away at a couple of pumpkins. I was too young to even remember this but do have a couple of the pics. We look like we are having a good time. Looks like I even spilled a little down my shirt. I guess the story goes that when the gang over at Safeway saw the professional pictures, they weren’t impressed with the results. I guess dad offered some photos that mom took after the photographer had left and we had all changed into our regular clothes. That was the picture that ended up in the Safeway News.
