Breast Cancer 3-Day

Breast Cancer 3-Day

logo1Hard to believe that Barb is a 10 year breast cancer survivor. In some ways it all seems like some sort of bad dream, like it really didn’t even happen to us, to Barb. But it did. In 1994, a routine exam revealed a tumor in Barb’s right breast. A needle biopsy revealed that it was malignant. Only 38 at the time and with two young kids, its not the news you want to hear from the doctor. Although Barb had the cancer, our whole family was affected by it and had to deal with it. It turned into our battle. Kelly and Kate were only 6 and 7 years old at the time. Babies who had to deal with their mom being sick. Not fun. After weighing several options, Barb had a lumpectomy followed by several rounds of radiation treatments. After her treatments and during recovery is when Barb really made a commitment to her health. Eating healthy and routine exercise, now a big part of our life, are due in large part to Barb wanting to the beat cancer, and beat it badly. And she has! Barb kicked cancer’s ass!!

The only negative lingering affect (aside from a small scar and a few “radiation tattoos”) is the fear in the back of our minds that there may be a re-occurrence. We have had to deal with this a couple of times over the years when a mammogram has revealed something that needed a better/closer look. Fortunately those were all false alarms. But it brings all those old, bad, negative feelings back to the forefront.

Barb really wanted to do something special to celebrate 10 years of being cancer free. She found out about this 3 day – 60 mile walk that is happening in October. Her and her girlfriend Lisa will be walking during the day, camping at night, as they make their way a meandering 60 miles from San Mateo to San Francisco. Ending their journey in Golden Gate Park on Sunday, October 17th. If you haven’t heard from Barb to make a donation, you will soon.
