Barb and her girlfriend Marie had planned a hike for this weekend. Since the forecast was for rain on Sunday, it looked like Saturday was going to be the better day. The plan was to meet at Sunol Regional Wilderness and take the Ohlone Wilderness trail towards Mission Peak. When I got out earlier for a Starbucks run, the clouds over Mission Peak, and beyond (where we were going) looked ominous. We dressed in layers, not knowing what to expect. Could be rainy, could be sunny. Met the Matuszaks, with faithful lab, Lydia at 9:30 at the visitor center of at Sunol Regional Wilderness. According to the park ranger, the round trip to Mission Peak and back would be eleven miles.
One of our doctors (Dr. Burke, cardiologist) does this hike and he said it was at least 6 hours round trip. Our plan was just to hike in that direction until we’ve had enough. This turned out to be a great hike. Was a little nervous at first because none of us had ever hiked this route and we really weren’t sure where we were going or even if we were on the right trail. We had a map but none of us were really expert reading a trail map. There were trail markers along the way but being our first time, we were just moving forward while trying not to forget the way back!.
We lucked out with the weather, Although a bit breezy when we started, it was mostly sunny the whole time. Of course a hike to a peak would mean we’d be going uphill. We did figure (hoped) that it would be a gradual ascent. For the most part it was gradual with a nice wide trail, but it started out with a single file trail that we had to climb. The best part of the hike for me was all the wildflowers in bloom. Totally cool to be walking amongst a sea of gold, purple white and red flowers. Not to mention that EVERYTHING ELSE was green. Made for a beautiful walk. After walking a meandering trail for about 90 minutes we still hadn’t even seen Mission Peak. We were getting hungry so we decided to walk a bit more in hopes that we could at least SEE Mission Peak. Sure enough, about ten minutes later we rounded a turn and there it was. The Peak looked very close. We could see a lot of people on the peak and even more hiking up the ridge. It was strange to see Mission Peak from this angle. We’ve always been on top of the peak and looked into the Sunol Wilderness. Now we were there looking up at the peak.
We found a nice flat spot to have lunch. I packed salami, mozzerella, whole grain baquet, strawberrys and watermelon and a little trail mix. Yummy yum yum! The perfect picnic lunch. Had a great time visiting with Ron and Marie, both during lunch and along the way. We decided that we had gone far enough for the day and figured we would turn around and head back. It was probably another hour or so to the peak. Next time we will have the confidence and the time to do it!!Another pretty cool thing about this hike was that we only saw one other hiker the whole
time. All in all it made for a special day with good friends. Turned out to be about 4 hours of hiking time. I’d estimate that we hiked about 9 miles with what would have been another mile or two to the peak. Next time for sure!
