Barb and I went to our first wedding where one of our friend’s kids was getting married. I guess that means we are getting old. The wedding of Jonathan (Tim and Linda’s #2 son) and Shea was held outdoors at the Inn at Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz. 200 guests watched as Jonny and Shea publicly proclaimed love for each other.
What a great couple and great families they come from. I predict a long happy marriage with many children! The outdoor ceremony was great! Short and Sweet. Shea looked fantastic in a ruby red trimmed wedding gown. Jonny looked like he always has, only older. We’ve known him since he was a babe. The reception was held right there on the grounds. Guests mingled near the OPEN BAR while the wedding party took pictures. We hung out with Pastor John, a good friend of Tim and Linda. Tim’s Mom, Marilyn came up after her pictures and we had a great time visiting with her. Had a couple of drinks and great appitizers. My fav was the jumbo shrimp wrapped in some kind of pot sticker type wrapper. YUMMY!
Said goodbye again to the Champagne Crew last night as they ended a quick summer vacation in Pacific Grove and headed home to Pittsburg. Last weekend Barb and I went to see the crew (kids #1 and #2 included) in PG. Just like old times. Nothing fancy, just good conversation amongst friends.
Walked down to Peppers for a great Mexican dinner, then back to the house for more visiting. Up early Sunday for a morning trip to Starbucks at Cannery Row and coffees over-looking the beautiful Monterey Bay. As has now become tradition, we met them for dinner last night at Max’s Opera Cafe in Burlingame. Just like we did two years ago when they were leaving Cali for Pitt. Last night it was on the way for them to catch the red-eye back home. The Champagne crew is doing all right. The little kids are growing up! The big kids are grown! AKC and TKL are AOK, look great and seem happier than ever. If they were only closer.
Til next time Champagne Crew!
Barb’s parents are in town for a couple of days. Eloise and Smitty are full time RV’ers who “live” in Yuma Arizona during the winter and cruise the continent during the summer. They are 9000 miles into this years trip, having left at the beginning of summer for Alaska and all points north, and now heading back down to Yuma. They stopped in the Bay area this week on the way back home. Had a nice visit and dinner out at old time Fremont Favortie El Patio Mexican Restaraunt.
We’ve been down the Alameda Creek Trail maybe a hundred times since we started riding bikes. The 9 mile trip to the end of the trail at San Francisco Bay is one of our favorites. We’ve always talked about taking our hybrid bikes over on the dirt side of the trail and check out what that side is like. We finally did this on Friday, doing a sunset ride on the dirt side. Got on the trail at Isherwood and headed west. Turned out to be really nice. With the exception of a little police action at the trail where it goes under highway 88O. Seems some sicko tried to assault a female jogger and do bad things to her. She fought him off and he ran. By the time we got to the 88O underpass, there were cops swarming everywhere.
They never found the scumbag. We proceeded on our ride out to the end of the trail. A totally different and equally beautiful perspective from that side of the creek. We rolled up to the end of the trail about 30 minutes before sunset. High tide and a little wind was causing some wave action! Something you don’t see on the paved trail. We took a couple of pictures to document our new adventure, shared a nice juicy orange and headed back home as the sun dipped below the horizon. A great way to start our weekend.
Got Kate moved in to her new digs in Sac. Barb, Kate and I went up Saturday morning and met Staci at Anne Marie and Joe’s house. Got her room set up the way she wanted, wireless router installed and tested (yay). After four or so hours of this we said goodbye to Staci and headed over to Erika and Mike’s house in Roseville for pizza and a swim. Had a great time visiting with the family. Nice knowing that Kate has so much family so close to school. Next morning we picked up Kate and went to visit the Camello Fam at their new digs in El Dorado Hills. Mike and Ann have really “moved up” from the old place in Fremont. Their new place is 3 times bigger and looks like a castle. Very plush both inside and out. WAY COOL KAHUNA!. We were planning on doing some last minute shopping for Kate but she got an invite to go jet-skiing at Folsom Lake with the Camello Clan that she couldn’t pass up. We said our goodbyes and left her in good hands. We love you honey!! Keep in touch : )
Varmit hunting season is in full force. The almond tree that we planted 20 years ago is producing an enormous amount of almonds. The squirrels and ravens have a heyday this time of year when nuts are ready for picking. Some mornings there are 30 or more crows up in the branches of the tree. When Niya goes outside they all scatter. There are plenty of times she has chased squirrels either back up the tree or outside the fence when they were eating nuts that have fallen. Its funny to see Niya sitting under the tree while squirrels up top are merrily eating away and dropping the husks and shells on her head.
There is one squirrel that lives down the street. Reason I know this is because as I’m sitting in the backyard office, little squirrley, who has just been to the almond tree out front, jumps from the tree to the roof of the house, from the roof of our house to the roof of my office, then to the back fence, up the telephone pole and down the telephone wire about 5 houses down. All this with a huge almond (husk and all) in his
mouth. One morning I come out of my office to go to the house and catch the squirrel just getting ready to jump. I think we scared eachother. He took a step back and went for it. Right over my head! Now I just leave my office door open and can watch him make his trips back and forth all day. He must have a pretty good stash of almonds, where ever he lives! Its Niya’s dream to catch herself a varmit!
Found this vintage soccer pic while poking around our old photo albums. The 1999 FYSL Blue Angels is like a friendship circle of today. We have a Flaherty, a Sturm, a Camello, and even a Vandenbusch thrown in for good luck. Many other familiar faces (hey, its Garrido!) among this crowd. Not to mention coach Kahuna.
I MISS SOCCER!!!!!
In a blur that is becoming Kate’s impending move to Sacramento and college life, we took a BIG LOAD of her belongings up yesterday. Kate starts school on Sept 5th but needs some time up there to familiarize herself with the campus, the neighborhood and her new roommates. Anne Marie and Joe have opened their home to Kate so she can live mere blocks from school.
We rented a small U-Haul truck and loaded it with her Bed, dresser, a dozen or so boxes and miscellaneous other stuff. Joe was on hand to welcome us. After Uncle Joe vacuumed the last bit of dust in Kate’s new room, we were ready to move her in. Set up her bed and stacked her boxes and sort of put things
where we think they will go. We even “built” an Ikea desk and chair for Kate so she can effectivly do homework and TCB in Sacratomato. We’ll set it all up and unpack this weekend. Said good bye to Joe til then and took the short cruise to the campus. Kate picked up her books at the book store and then we went to lunch at Mr. Pickle right off campus. Then home to Fremont.
The 110 mile trip makes us realize that Kate will not just be around the corner going to school. She is a great kid, in a great environment with nothing but opportunity ahead of her. The firsts are lasts and lasts are firsts. The last night that we will go to sleep with our kids snug in their beds. Her first night in her new home. Its all good, and the best is yet to come.
Another great weekend in Northern California!! A couple of Giants / Dodgers games, with a Mission Peak hike and Coyote Hills bike ride thrown in for good measure. Barb and I went on a nice 16 mile bike ride after work on Friday. Beautiful cruise out to, and around Coyote Hills. Saturday morning we had planned on hiking Mission Peak and invited team Vandenbusch along for the walk. Started at Ohlone College at 9am and made our way up while there was still some morning cloud cover. Team Vandenbusch was leading a grueling pace and pushing us up that hill at near record pace. We were atop the peak in 1 hour 15 minutes! I had planned ahead and brought some bloody mary makings (ice included) and other morning nutrition. Had a nice rest at the peak and recharged a bit. Great way to start the day!
We were back down the hill, gone to Starbucks for iced green tea lemonades and back home by noon. The Mission Peak hike is a tough one. Not so much (ok, yes so much) on the way up or down, but afterwards. Usually need at least an hour to regroup after a hike like that. Not to mention the next day (and day after and day after) muscle aches!. Today my legs are still screaming! Walking like an old man.
I had bought tickets to the Saturday Giants / Dodgers game months ago. The reason I got these tickets was because it was the Dodgers,
it was a Saturday night (rare 6pm start!), and the seats were on the aisle. What more could you ask for? We met up with Tim and Linda at our house and I drove to the game. Parked at pier 48 and walked into AT&T park. It was “BEAT L.A.” night so everyone got a ‘BEAT LA” Giants cap. YAY!!!!!! Our seats were special. Section 302 in “view reserved”, which means nosebleed territory. Our seats were 3 rows from
the top row at the last section on the right field side. Our section was “reversed pie shaped”. At the top row there was only one seat. There were
only four seats in our entire row! Pretty darn cool (and windy!) up there, with a great view of the field, McCovey Cove, the Bay Bridge and most of the Bay Area! Great seats! Unfortunately, we were stuck in a section that had a lot of Dodger fans. and even more unfortunately, the Dodger scored 10 runs in the first two innings. UGH!!. Still a fun night though. (check out the pictures here) The Giants ended up losing 14-7. Man I hate those Dodgers.
Sunday morning it was time to get ready for yet another Giants Dodgers matchup!. Redemption day! Al Shull had called Friday night and invited me (along with Holy Spirit chums Steve and Phil) to the Sunday game. How could I resist! Friday night I thought I could be witness to a sweep of the Dodgers!! By Sunday, I was hoping that we would at least salvage a series win against the hated boys from Socal. The four men took BART from Fremont to the Embarcadero, then streetcar to the park. We arrived a bit early so we stopped in the ACME Chop House and sat at the bar for a pregame cocktail. The Chop House is “inside” the park and aside from Mo Mo’s, the “place to be” before or after a Giants game. So we had a drink, got one “to go”, and made our way to our seats for the 1:05 start. Shull is a season ticket holder who has four nice seat in the upper reserved. We sat in these seats last year when Al wanted some representation at Irish night at SBC Park. The seats were great, the day was great, but the game stunk. When you can’t hit AND can’t pitch it makes luck your only hope. We did have some hope but luck ran out in the 9th. Bases loaded, tying run at the plate situation and two strike outs to end the game. Man I hate those Dodgers.
What a surprise to see Annette and Debbie show up at the game in the 8th inning!! They somehow had gotten a couple of tickets and a premium parking pass to the game so they arrived late and surprised us!! Good thing the girlfriends were in line for beer at the time or it would have been an awkward moment! : ) It was nice to see Annette and Deb! Al and Steve were especially happy. Al even got the added good news when he gets home he had a clogged toilet and had flooded the bathroom to deal with. YAY! We said goodbye to Annette and Deb and boarded the streetcar then BART train home with all the other dejected Giant fans, for the ride back to Fremont. Good thing there were no Dodger fans in sight or it could’ve got ugly : ) All in all a good weekend, but man, I hate those Dodgers
