Water Polo Weekend

Picture_028_2 A blur of water polo this weekend!  The Pioneer Shootout on Thursday Friday, followed by the UC Santa Cruz Slug fest on Saturday Sunday.  Six games in four days.  Kelly and the CSUEB girls are in the thick of their season, and doing pretty darn good.   Her school hosted the Pioneer shootout. They played Mercyhurst and Grove City, both East coast schools out on a west coast tournament swing. CSUEB easily handle both schools. Picture_011_1 Kelly scored a nice goal against Grove City. The Slug fest in Santa Cruz was great. Last year we drove over the summit while it was snowing and it hailed in the pool during the games. This year it was California winter at its best. High 60s and sunny.  CSUEB played two SOCAL schools on Saturday. Occidental and Whittier.  Both ahead of them in the polls.  Two great games.  Of course the highlight for us was that Kelly scored yet another goal. She definitely has our vote for MVP! Diane had come to watch and in between games we went to her house for a lunch of meatballs and sausage. Mama Mia!

The Sunday games were a win against Colorado State and a loss to Santa Clara. They head into the mid season in fine shape to perhaps take a run at the national title. Should be interesting. Stay tuned.

Walking with Barb – Mission Peak

Picture_023 Well I guess its safe to say that Barb is recovering pretty well from her spine surgery.  She has continued her walking regimine and even hiked Mission peak twice with her girlfriends in the last three weeks. Picture_028Doctors are amazed at her recovery and cleared her to return to work on April 5th.  Barb and I started early Sunday morning at the Ohlone side for MY first Mission Peak hike in almost 6 months.  As we were heading up to the parking lot, we saw a scout troup heading up chalk hill, so we figured we’d try to beat them to the peak. It was a great hike.  Fresh legs made the first (and always toughest) part of the hike to the seasonal pond pretty easy. We scooted by about 12 scouts/parents before we even got to the pond. Made it to the peak in 1 hour 15 minutes. A very fast pace.

Trouble on the Creek Trail

Picture_022_2 Out early Saturday morning for a ride with Vandenbusch, cruising along the last two miles of the Alameda Creek Trail, just enjoying the peace, the solitude, and the beauty of the morning, when all of a sudden, the silence interrupted by a couple of short BWOOP, BWOOPs. An ambulance behind us on the trail! Holy cow! We pulled over and let them pass. A few hundred yards further, and by the time we got there, the paramedics were tending to a cyclist who was laying prone in the middle of the trail. Poor guy must have taken a fall or something. We made our way around and continued to the end of the trail, took a break and headed back. They had the guy in a neck brace, on a back board and were loading him into the ambulance.  Park ranger and park police had also arrived.  Very strange to see so much action in a place that is normally peaceful and serene. Best or luck to our fellow cyclist. Hope to see you out there again sometime soon.
