Niya at the Rainbow Bridge
We lost a very special member of our family yesterday. Niya, our faithful and loyal German Sheppard, had to be put down. She was part of our family for 11 1/2 years. She was our friend and protector. With Niya (who once tipped the scales at 105 lbs) in the house, or front yard, no one dared tried to mess with us! She may have looked intimidating, but she wouldn’t hurt a fly. She was a big baby. A real sweetheart. A loving dog. A member of our family. She slept next to our bed every night. Snored like a lumberjack some nights. When we had the backyard office built five years ago, she “went to work” with me every day. Comfortable laying under my desk all day long until the work day was over. As big as she was, it didn’t leave much room for me or my legs, but we adapted. We have a 4 foot fence in the front yard. Niya could spend long summer days just kicking back under the shade of the almond tree. No squirrel or black bird dare try to take Almonds from our tree. Niya would park herself under that tree so nobody got by. She once kept a squirrel up in the tree for 10 hours! She would chase the UPS truck up and down the fence line and bark at anyone who dared walk by. As big and as strong as she was, she never once tried to jump the front fence. After a while, she never even considered it. The good thing was that only WE knew that she wouldn’t jump the fence. She learned the ways of the neighborhood and soon only barked at true strangers. Niya and the UPS guy even eventually made their peace. We got a new driver who loved Niya and, after a very slow “getting to know you” process, would stop every day and get out to give Niya some love.
Time started to take its toll on Niya in the last year. Her hips and back legs were really starting to give her trouble. She blew a ligament in her hind leg when she was four (chasing squirrels on front lawn) and that looked to be giving her some problems again. In the end it was a huge struggle just to get to her feet, and stay on her feet. We had to put throw rugs all through the house because Niya couldn’t stand on the tile or hardwood. Her back legs would always start to slip. It would get to the point where she would get in the kitchen and get “stuck”. Afraid to move for fear of slipping and sliding. She feared going down the two steps from the house to the front or back yard. The only reason she did it was because I was asking. She was afraid of losing control and falling (which she did a couple of times) The last couple of months we just tried to make things as easy as possible. In the end, we asked the vet to come to the house so Niya didn’t have to deal with the stress of going to the vet. It was a good situation for Niya. She lay right in the living room like always. One little shot to relax her, then one to say goodbye.
I’m sad. I’m releived. I loved that dog.
we find great solice in this beautiful writing…
Rainbow Bridge – author unknown
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….
