Witches of Neptune Beach

When I’m at the beach, either sitting or walking, I generally don’t engage other people on the beach in conversation.  I’m just not that kind of guy that can easily walk up to a stranger and start a conversation. Barb on the other hand can talk to anyone. She can chat up other dog walkers or just anyone. She actually met a couple that we’ve gone to a couple of concerts with. She’s good that way.

So I was sitting at the beach today after walking Sweetheart, just watching the waves and the world go by. More people than normal for a winter’s Thursday. Mostly because it was great weather after freezing temps last week.

I see a guy down the beach walking this way. Didn’t pay much more attention until he was steps away asking me if I wanted my dog to go to heaven with me when I die. This gentleman seems to be about my age. Big belly. Shorts and a tank top that says Jesus on it. He was either mildly drunk or full of the holy spirit, I couldn’t tell which. He went on a bit more about something or other (Jesus) as sweetheart tangled his legs up with her leash. Good girl!

As he got himself untangled and was about to  go on his way, he said that I should not go north of the pier near Neptune Beach because many witches live there.

The Reason we are here

The 18 months we spent on Kate and Frank’s ranch were so special. Parker time all the time. 24 x 7 x 365.  He is the reason we are here. We drove him to and from school everyday.  Just the normal conversations in the car were priceless.  We spent all our time together and the quiet times were the best. This picture was taken shortly after we arrived and after a long day. Quiet time on the couch with Grandma.

Jax Beach Jimmy

What a strange wonderful trip its been.

I’ve been promising myself that I would bring jimsjoint back to life in some form or another.  There is so much that has happened the last few years that I have neglected to comment on for one reason or another. Then a couple of months ago I at least attempted to start a new page that could document our life here in Florida. Then it was a matter of where to start.  In my mind it should start with our cross country drive from Fremont to Live Oak. I will tell that story here soon. Also the great 18 months we lived with Kate and Frank and Parker in our new 38 foot travel trailer and the times with Parker for those first 6 months that I wasn’t working. So much fun!  Or how about my great job with the Florida Highway Patrol?  So many stories to tell.  Our house hunting that resulted in us living at the beach!  Our wonderful new friends and neighbors. Where to begin? Where to Begin?

All of these were worthy starting points for the new jimsjoint, but for some reason I still didn’t feel like the Jax Beach Jimmy that I needed to be.  Then I landed a sweet little “glide into retirement” job here at the beach and I felt that I was finally home.  Talk about luck of the Irish.  My dream had been to work my last years in the work force close to home. Someplace low stress and rewarding.  Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s would have been cool, but our local liquor store seemed like a cool gig.  I emailed the company and asked if they were hiring at the Jacksonville Beach Store. Within 10 minutes I got a reply telling me to call the manager.  They offered me the job after the interview. Broudy’s Liquors is a family owned chain of 5 stores, mostly in St Augustine. The Jax Beach store is great. Right on the border of Jax Beach and Ponte Vedra.  Broudy’s motto is Life’s short, Drink Better. To that end they carry a great selection of beer, wine and liquor.  You can buy a $2 can of Bud Light or a $3800 bottle of scotch.  I’m so lucky to be working there. A great bunch of guys are teaching me the business.  The cool thing is that Broudy’s has a drive thru!  Thanks to friends and neighbors Cory and Maria for snapping the photo of me working the drive through!!

So my little retirement gig (hey! I’m only 62 so still a few more years until REAL retirement) is perfect. Only a mile and a half from home to work (instead of 82 miles when doing the FHP commute) and only 4 minutes when I hit all the lights green!!  Compared to 80 minutes doing the FHP commute.  I haven’t filled the tank in the truck for two months!!  Barb and I are grateful to Kate and Frank for the hospitality, the FHP for taking a chance on me, for the support from family and friends from afar.  So we are really settling in to beach life now and that’s where we will start our blog. We’ll look back and look forward to bridge all the gaps from “our life and times in the wild wild west” to #jaxbeach jimmy.

We are home!!

JAX BEACH BABY!!!

I love this picture. Although its not great quality, it shows Barb in her happy place. We had been talking and dreaming about a place at the beach. This picture is the first time we went to the beach after closing on our house.

Hello 2024

Man. 2024 is here. Its been on my radar forever. This is the year that I turn 65. My retirement year.  Medicare, social security, no more work, life of leisure,  all that.

2024 has been on all my retirement paperwork throughout the years of working. my small hp pension comes available this year, and I had seen that March 2024 date on every benefit statement that received since I don’t know when. When we met with Fidelity reps to discuss my 401k the first question always when to do plan to cash in. 2024!   When we decided to pull the trigger and move to Florida, it was all with the goal of getting to 2024 so we could retire comfortably.  I distinctly remember sitting in the hot tub back in Fremont talking to Barb about possibly moving to Florida.  A lot had to happen to make that possible, most notably was selling our house for enough to cover our debts and pay cash here in Florida. The other meatball hanging out there was to find reasonable work (medical insurance) for the next seven years.

Seven years of the great unknown. I had never been without a job, but after a few months enjoying life with Barb and Parker and Kate and Frank I started looking. When I was lucky enough to land a state job with the Florida Highway Patrol I figured I was set. Then, fortunately and unfortunately,  in 2018 we found our forever beach home. Unfortunately that now I have a daily 160 mile commute. Fortunately that we had a great house with fantastic neighbors.  Additionally, we lucked out big time because if we wanted to move to this neighborhood now we could not afford it. Strangely and luckily enough for us, our house’s price has almost doubled since we moved in. Insane but I’m so glad we are on the better side of it.

Giving up that job at FHP was very hard to do. I was happy there and the people we so good to work for and with.  Luck of the Irish came through and I got the job at the local liquor store that got me to the point.

So where from here?  Been spending some time getting my ducks in a row. Signing up for Medicare, SS, pension. annuity so they all kick in relatively close to each other and hopefully by my birthday next month.

Goals : Blog, stretch, walk, ride, mediate, read, cook, grandparent, live, breath, laugh and love. Not necessarily in that order.

In my mind its always been about February 2024.  And we are almost there!!

Let the fun begin!!

Crow Chronicles

I think it was when I was in Long Beach watching Betty that the whole crow thing started.  I knew previously that if you treat a crow nicely and feed it snacks that one day that crow may bring you a treasure.  When in California Kelly had a crow that she was trying to befriend. I was feeding it while she hiked and really did start a routine of showing up and being fed every day.  Barb’s girlfriend Marie has “adopted” a couple of crows that she now feeds daily.

There are crows in our neighborhood that we see (and hear)  all the time. Especially when we walk along the creek trail by our house. There is a myriad of wildlife hanging out there. Ducks, geese, Ibis, turtles crows and more!  So we took it upon ourselves to start the great crow experiment.  For a couple of months now we would bring a small bag of nuts on our dog walks and if we saw a crow we would put a nut on the post by the trail. The crow would immediately swoop down in gobble it up.  We’d place  a nut on every other post and sure enough the crow would follow us down the line. Around the bend and headed to home, we would place a bigger pile of nuts on the last post before heading home. Barb even started calling to them on our walks. She’d use the clicking/clucking type noise that you hear crows do. We’d get on the creek trail there and start clicking and clucking away. Good thing only the crows heard us!

So we’ve been doing this regular for the last two months that Kelly has been here. Morning creek trail walk with the dogs. Bring nuts. So now on most days the crows see us before we see them.  The come flying in and hanging out, waiting for a snack.  Sometimes just one crow. Mostly its three that hang our together but a few times we had up to five crows hanging out for morning nuts.  Still putting a big pile on the last post before heading home, but on a few days these crows would follow us all the way (not very far) home. If they made it all the way home with us they would get what’s left of the nuts in a stepping stone next to our mailbox. So a couple of time now there have been crows waiting for us outside the house when we start our walk! Coincidence? I think not.

Kelly suggested that we start looking for crow treasure. From reading up, most people have a designated spot. One spot and one spot only, to feed the crows. then the crows would reciprocate by bringing treasure to the food box. Crow treasure and include shiny things like bottle tops, the tab from an aluminum can, a button, little pieces of colorful plastic or metal. Since we feed “our” crows all along the creek trail I had to keep an eye out. There has been nothing until today.

Normal morning creek trail walk. The crows caught up with us eventually and I gave them small bites along the way. Then at the last post where we usually put the final big pile of nuts, I see laying there a bone! Yes, a BONE!!  At first I thought someone just put a bone there for whatever reason. I threw on the grass and placed the pile there and proceeded on our way. When I got home I called Kelly and told her about the bone. “THATS A TREASURE!” she said. Turns our that crows do leave bones that they find as a thank you. She also informed me that we now need to get a crow box to store the crow treasure.  Definitely looking for an upgrade from bones but its interesting!
