Eagle Soccer – Let The Games Begin

Its a stressful life being a soccer parent. As we are finishing up a great season of Fremont city soccer, tryouts for the high school team are taking place. Kelly and Kate both attended soccer conditioning the last few weeks and tryouts this week in hopes of making the varsity squad.  There is a new coach this year with high expectations. He has already stated that just because you were on the varsity team last year does not guarantee you a spot this year. There were only two seniors on the (very good)  team last year so the openings are few and the competition fierce.  Plus, there are several very good incoming  freshman that are trying out. Its going to be rough. At the high school level, Kelly and Kate are competing with class I,II and III players who have pretty much played soccer year round since they were small. Kelly and Kate play class IV soccer, less competitive, more recreational. So for them to make the team would be something special.

Goalie Kate, trying out for one of two goalkeeper spots has a pretty good chance. Her playing in city league has really improved her skills.  Kelly, the consummate worry wart, is competing for one of the field positions. The coach has already told her that she is “on the bubble” and really has to perform well to make the team. Two days of tryouts ended with a final “rainy day” scrimmage to determine who would play varsity, who would play JV, and who would go home. After the scrimmage the coach announced who made the JV team, then who would play varsity, and if he didn’t call your name, sorry, better luck next year.

I went to pick them up, knowing that it could be that both made it, both didn’t, or one made it and one didn’t. It was stressful for me as I waited. I guess Kelly gets the worrier gene from me. Anyway, it was all smiles as they got to the car. Both made the cut and landed on the varsity squad. WHEW!!

A big congratulations to Kate. This is her first time being on a VARSITY team. You go goalie!

The 25 game schedule begins Monday with a scrimmage against Dublin and finishes February 3rd against Logan High
