Weekend Dinners

Saturday night we had a great dinner at Brandon’s in Milpitas.  Friends Lorraine and Ron were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary and invited all their friends and family. I’d say about 100 people gathered. Many of Barb’s hiking buds were there, along with some ex-co-workers from the Avantek days. It was a great time and a great dinner.

Sunday it was over to the Eacret’s for enchiladas!  Haven’t seen Lisa and Randy for quite a while so it was nice to catch up. They have a super duper sized HDTV and the new (to us) Nintendo Wii. We played some “Mario Cart.”  The “breadman” was dominant and we got our asses kicked on almost every race.  Definite home field advantage there, but still fun!!  Dinner was good. Home made chicken enchiladas, rice and beans, and a couple cervezas. Just the four of us at the kitchen table. It was a nice enjoyable meal.

Vicky V Birthday Bash

Picture 266 Team Vandenbusch rented a very cool beach house in Santa Cruz for a week to celebrate Vicky’s 50th.  Festivities were going on all week with family an friends coming and going. We drove down Thursday after work for the birthday bash. Dinner and drinks in a private room at the Crow’s Nest. Beautiful setting right on the water at the Santa Cruz harbor. I think there were about 40 people there for dinner. All Vicky’s favorite peeps. Picture 291 Dinner was fantastic. I had the fillet mignon, Barb had the sea bass. Both wonderful. Cheesecake and coffee for dessert! I’m in heaven! Back to the house for birthday fun. Really just kicked back and enjoyed the night, the people, and the house.  Full moon casting its light down on the still ocean waters, gentle wave lapping at the shore. The house is tri-level and very nice. Picture 276 People gathered in the first floor kitchen, the second floor family room or  the top floor deck. It was nice to meet and hang with the people that are close to Vicky.  I must say, they have a nice bunch of friends.  Next day was kickback. A short walk to the boardwalk, quick sit on the beach, Picture 268 then back to the house. I tell ya, just hanging out in that house  felt like some thing from “lifestyles of the rich and famous.” Spent a lazy Friday afternoon on the top floor deck catching some rays and watching the action on the beach.  The plan was to go to a free concert on the beach and spend another night. That didn’t happen.  All good things must come to an end. This good thing came a bit early for us. Barb was on some new meds and they weren’t agreeing with her. We ended up coming home on Friday evening.

Semper Fi Flaherty

Scan0002 I mentioned this in a previous post but this news is SO BIG that it deserves a posting all its own. Kate, our baby, our little girl,  has gone and joined the United States Marine Corps!  She had spoken to a recruiter weeks ago. She took the ASFAB test and physical a few days after that, and came home with papers signed. Kate will report for duty on 12/15/08 and spend 13 lovely weeks in Parris Island South Carolina, then training in one of three skillsets, telecommunications, logistics or Intel and signals. Then, who knows?  Four years of service dedicated to protecting the life and liberty of you and I.  YOU GO KATIE!!  We are PROUD. So very proud!   We love you honey!

No Deleterious mutation – YaY!

“No deleterious mutation was found in BRCA1 or BRCA2 in this individual”

Music to our ears!  As part of Barb’s breast cancer treatment it was suggested that she undergo genetic testing to see if she carries the “breast cancer gene”. This new test is state of the art. She is a candidate for genetic testing since her mom had breast cancer and Barb had breast cancer previously. She submitted a blood sample a couple of weeks ago. She got the results when she went for her Herceptin drip today.  After explaining that the “test is designed to identify mutations in 22 exons and approx 750 adjacent intronic base pairs of BRCA1 as well as 26 exons and approx 950 adjacent base pairs or BRCA2 (a total of over 17,600 base pairs analyzed), The second to last sentence says it all:

“This result rules out the majority of abnormalities believed to be responsible for hereditary susceptibility to breast and ovarian cancer.”

That is great news, HUGE NEWS!!  Not only for Barb, but for Kelly and Kate as well. And also for Barb’s sisters and mom.

WHEW!

sigh!

Happy Birthday Staci

Scan Our oldest daughter turns 31 today!  Seems like yesterday that young Staci (and her mom) knocked on our door and talked about her “babysitting” Kelly and Kate. It was a match made in heaven. And now all these years later she is still part of our family. We are as proud of her as we are Kelly and Kate. Enjoy your day!

Happy Birthday Kate

Scan0002 Young Kate, our baby, turned 23 years old yesterday!  It was a good day for her. Frank brought her flowers at work and took her out to lunch.  They went out to dinner at a local Japanese restaurant. We miss having her around but are so glad that she is Happy in her life with Frank. Its a long way from the summer party’s we used to have when she was a little kid.   Even th0ugh Kate is a big girl now, she will always be our baby.

Love you honey!

GOOD VIBES TOUR – TAHOE 2008 – CELEBRATE!

What a great great GREAT vacation! A year of cancer crap behind us, we were ready to relax and have a good time with great friends in the most beautiful place in the world, Lake Tahoe.

Sunset Sunday  –  We drive up mid-morning with Ron and Marie following behind. They stayed with us the first two nights. We check in, settle in a bit, then walked to dinner right next door at the Riva Grill. Great meal. I had the halibut ><>. We had a great table outside on the deck overlooking Ski Run Marina and the lake. THIS IS TAHOE BABY!   After dinner it was off to state-line check out the casino action. We called it a night after a long travel day. Oh so glad to be in Tahoe.

Side note – Since we were in a timeshare with full kitchen, and since we were going to be there a week, I decided to bring the Italia espresso machine along with us. Every other year, if we wanted an espresso drink I would either ride my bike or drive to Starbucks for our usual grande dry cap and grande soy latte.  This year I stumbled out to the kitchen and turned on the machine. IT WAS THE BEST.  I think there is something about the high altitude that makes milk foam better because I was a foam guru up there. Anyway, the machine worked great all week so assume that everyday starts with a perfect cappuchino and soy latter, maybe two, or three!

Picture 019 Monday –  We all walk to Heavenly Village. Ron and I had decided to ride the Heavenly Flyer, a vertical  3100 ft dual zip line that just opened in Heavenly Valley.  Barb and Marie do some window shopping down below and head back to lay by the pool. Ron and I head up the Gondola to 9156 ft, have some liquid courage at the bar, then take yet another lift to where we zip back down the mountain. Ron and I went side by side. I was still trying to figure out how I was going to hold on AND video the experience when the gate opened and away we went. VERY COOL.Check out the video by clicking here. After the zip line it  was back to the pool where we joined the ladies. After some quality pool time we Picture 133 showered, dressed and headed back to Riva Grill for another dinner. Hey, its so close and so good ( I had the rib eye this time) that we couldn’t go wrong. After another great dinner we took the casino trip again. We had to cut it short because we had a busy day planned for Tuesday. We said good night and good bye to our good friends Marie and Ron, We were going to be up early and they would be sleeping in before they had to head home. It was great to be able to share some of the stuff that we like to do in Tahoe with our good friends.

Picture 090 Tuesday – Up early and getting ready for the only thing that we had scheduled on the trip. A hike from Spooner Lake to Marlette lake with my sister and brother. This is what we have been calling a “Half Dome prep.” A high altitude 8 mile hike that will give us a little test. John had picked the hike and it turned out to be a winner.  Anne Marie picked us up at our timeshare and we drove to Spooner Lake. We met John and his hiking buddy Kenny. Shari and the grandkids were there too but they were going to the beach to play while we did the hikePicture 086 .  The 4 miles to Marlette Lake was spectacular. It special to hike with my brother and sister. We talked of old times, good times to come,  and how nice it would have been to have bro Mike along for the hike. It was also a special day because of Barb. (see previous post)  After all she had been through, to be doing this hike is a testament to her intestinal fortitude. You rock Barbie!   The hike was a cool, shady single track trail up through the forest, through flowered meadows of yellow, purple, red and green. So beautiful. Not to difficult (thank you Mission Peak). After two hours we arrived at Marlette Lake.  As soon as we got on the lake side trail Picture 073 we saw a bear! Not only did we see it, we saw it catch a fish. It climbed into a fish ladder and snagged a nice big fish, then ran into the woods for lunch. But not before our feeble attempt to scare it away, Too cool. To see the video of my brave sister trying to scare the bear, click here. After the excitement of the bear episode, we cruised over to a nice shade spot on the lake to rest, refresh, and have lunch. Anne Marie, per her tradition, took a short swim in the lake. We took some pics and then headed back the way we came. another chance to see the beauty of the alpine wilderness. Like I said, a special day that I’ll never forget.

Picture 126 Then we said our goodbyes back at Spooner lake and headed back to South Shore. After a shower and rest ,we hooked up with new friends John and Michelle for an impromptu BBQ (for us anyway)  over at Pope Beach. We met Michelle and John through team Vandy and have really grown to like them. They are our kind of people. Young, hip, and sooooo good looking! : )  John and Michelle have a cabin in south shore so are pretty much locals. The bbq’d chicken and turkey burgs with all the fixin’s. good food! Made plans to do a bike ride with John the next morning. The park rangers kicked us out at 9pm. We were the last ones to leave!  We headed back to the timeshare and crashed for the night

Picture 147 Wednesday – HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARBIE!!    Spent some time by the pool with the birthday girl, then got ready for dinner at the Beacon with Team Downing. There are a few places that you HAVE to eat while in Tahoe. One is Riva Grill, the other is The Beacon. Lake front, beachside dining at its best. Great to spend some quality time with Michelle and John and daughter Olivia. We ate, we  drank, we toasted to birthdays, to friends old and new. The end to another great night at the lake. Unfortunatly, the end to the battery in my camera. No more pictures until Kate brings the charger up on Thursday

Thursday – Kick back day – getting ready for 4th of July festivities. We’ve been sleeping in all week so I left Barb in Bed and went to meet John for a little ride. Met at Regan Beach and he took me on the great little lake tahoe ride. up through some meadow along trout creek, then down towards the Keys, across a marshy meadow and along the tree lined trails of South Lake Tahoe. We road great single track trails mostly all the way to Baldwin Beach. It was great being with John, who knew his way around. I only knew the paved trails that EVERYONE knows about. John took me on some trails that are way less travelled. NICE RIDE!   I made chicken tacos for dinner and had the Downings over. All good. Staci, Shane and Kate arrive. Kelly and Heather make it up too. The family is here! Yay!

Picture 168 Picture 009 Friday – 4th of July – craziness. We set up our spot at 10am to get ready for the 10pm fireworks show. The beach gets crowded early but we are set. Kahuna and family arrive from Emerald Bay. The Shull clan arrives with Pat and Sue!  Jens and Kelly arrive from Nevada city. Downings come too. We are set. Eventually the sun sets and we sit back to watch “the biggest fire works exhibit west of the Mississippi”. It was great! HAPPY 4th EVERYONE  and GOD BLESS AMERICA

Side note: speaking of God Bless America, our baby, our little girl, our Kate, has gone and joined the United States Marine Corps! She had spoken to a recruiter and took the ASFAB test and physical and came home with papers signed. Kate will spend 12 lovely weeks in Perris Island South Carolina, then training in one of three skillsets, telecommunications, logistics or media/journalism. Then, who knows? We are PROUD and scared. More proud than scared. Kate leaves for Basic training on 12/15/08. Please pray to keep her safe and strong. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Picture 185 Saturday – Everyone wanted to do the zip line at Heavenly. Only Al Shull got a seat on the last group of the day. Even though it looked like the zip line was out, I had always wanted to take the Gondola up to Heavenly Valley, then do a hike. So Barb and I and Jens and Kelly decided to pay the $30 bucks to ride the Gondola and adventure out into the summer wilderness. Picture 178  The Gondola takes you from the Tahoe basin at 6225 ft to an observation deck at 8250ft. Took a couple of lake shots, then boarded the Gondola again up to “advance base camp”.  A spot up top where you can get a  $9.00 hotdog or $12 drink. Also the place to ride and watch the Heavenly Flyer zip line. During the winter skiers come here and then board other ski lifts to runs on both the California and Nevada sides of the mountain. During Picture 201a summer the ski runs are used for hiking. We chose the “East Lake” hike. A 4 mile round trip down the Nevada side. Although it was shorter than our Marlette Lake hike a couple of days earlier, the East Lake hike was harder in some aspects. Maybe it was the altitude, or the fact that most of the hike back was steep uphill. It was cool. We had a great time with Kelly and Jens. After our hike, it was just about time for Shull to ride the Flyer. We sat down with $10 beer in hand and waited for Al and Nick to fly by. It isnt a great shot but we did get them on   video as they zipped by. That’ll be $35 for the pictures and video Al. : )

Picture 222 Saturday Night- The last night in town. We had a nice dinner outside at Womack’s BBQ, then headed back to the timeshare to get ready to go home the next day.

Sunday – It was up and out. drank a last couple dry caps with Jens and Kelly, then packed everything up. We hit the road and were home by about 3:30. Traffic on 50 was a nightmare but we were spared the worst of it since we left a little early. Good Picture 235thing we got home because our weekend wasn’t over! At 5pm it was off to Vandenbusch Manor for master Steve’s birthday. They had planned on coming up to Tahoe on saturday, but Steve got sick. Poor guy, pushing himself too hard for too long. Either way, by Sunday afternoon he was all better and ready to party. It was the Flaherty’s the Downing’s and the Vandenbusch’s for a summer birthday BBQ at the Vandenbusch estate!  We were like the Gatsbys

What a difference a year makes……

It was a year ago that we found out about Barb’s breast cancer. Two days before summer 2007 Tahoe trip. Barb was following through with another suspicious lump in her breast. She had already had a mammogram and was advised to get ultra-sound biopsy. The next day after the biopsy, the Dr. called Barb at work and  told her to come to the office, “and please bring your husband”. UGH!!  Barb calls me at home and we agree to meet at the Dr. office.  A thousand questions.  Hundreds of scenarios go through my mind.  The doctor said that there was no doubt. Stage 2 cancer,  IDC – invasive ductile carcinoma.  The diagnosis spurns a flurry of craziness. Not only the darkest thoughts in your mind, but in reality as well. Appointments need to be made. Scheduling of tests that need to be taken. Surgery. Oncologists. Double mastectomy. Breast reconstruction.  Chemotherapy. Hormone therapy.  Is this really happenning to us?!?

Oh, wait, we have a weeks vacation in Tahoe starting day after tomorrow! . Rooms booked. Plans made, friends coming in from far and wide. Good times to be had. And, oh yea, Barb has cancer.

We arrived in Tahoe two days later. In Shock. Trying our best to deal with the  news.  We didn’t know if this would be our last Tahoe vacation as a family. We didn’t know how good, how bad the situation was. All we knew was IDC and that the year ahead would be a difficult one.  Remember, Barb had just had a spinal fusion the previous December. She had been back to work only two months when we were hit with this. We took things one day at a time during her fusion recovery, and decided the best way to handle things moving forward would be to take things one day at a time again.

In a way, the vacation (and the cancer news)  couldn’t have come at a better time. We shared the news with friends and family, and were surrounded by all of them during our vacation. We knew that the road ahead would be a bumpy one, but with the grace of God, our loving family, our good friends, and good vibes, we would survive.

All the while in Tahoe last year, we said (and I thought) that whatever Barb goes through, and we go through with her, that we will all get through it together, and we will be back in Tahoe for 4th of July in 2008 to celebrate. We knew that if we could get back to Tahoe for 4th of July 2008, that most everything would be behind us.

Well, WE MADE IT. The last year has been rough, but we made it!  Barb still has some stuff going related to her surgery and side effects from all the meds she is on, but overall she is doing great. WE MADE IT!

Fairlawn ct The Flaherty kids pretty much grew up on Fairlawn Ct. Lots of memories there. Here is a picture of mom, Anne Marie, Mike and baby John (Jimmy not born yet!) standing out front.

50 days to Half Dome

Picture 307 Trying to “keep it healthy” as we count down the days to our half dome hike. We  went for a 4 mile walk on the creek trail Friday after work. Followed that with turkey burgers on wheat bread sandwiches for dinner.  All good. On Track. Then the phone rings. Team Vandy is at La Pinata and wants us to come for a margarita. Off track.  Planned a Mission Peak hike for Saturday morning.  Back on track!  Team Vanden (with two kids and two dogs -Minus Steve.  Steve was going to meet up later), Team Downing, Team Becky, So eight people and two dogs, and Steve to meet up later.A late start. Already starting to get warm as we made our way up chalk hill. Somewhere near the whomping willow, Barb was hitting the wall, out of breath from new meds (and everything else from the past year) and  struggling, We all met up at the “pee tree” and did an assessment. Picture 312 It was so hot that we were thinking that maybe the dogs were struggling too much as well. After some discussion it was decided that Becky,Vicky and I would continue up to the peak and that the rest would head back down and bring the dogs to Steve.  So up we went and down they went. Talked to Barb a couple times to see how she was and where they were. We made it to the top, had a quick snack, take a couple of pics then headed back down. It was only then that we realized that the folks that had gone down already were sitting in the shade and drinking ice cold beer! HEY WAIT A MINUTE!!!  Isn’t that the “reward” beer for those that had acutally made it to the peaK? We better hurry back down! Fortunatly there was enough to go around.

Sunday after mass, Steve and I did a 20 mile ride out the creek trail to Coyote Hills. Powered up the dirt version of heart attack hill.

Today my legs are aching. Onward to Half Dome!
